Obituary Bessie Hugh Godette was born December 19, 1947, to the late Matthew Littleton Godette and Cornelia Augustus Stanley Godette in Beaufort, N.C. Bessie was the 5th child of this union. Bessie was baptized and a member of St. Stephen Congregational Church of Christ. Bessie was young enough to be raised alongside Anthony, Agnes and Melton in the home with her parents. Bessie would become Melton guardian after her mother passing. Bessie attended Queen Street High and was a part of the Class of 1966. Bessie would come to Virginia to live with Doris and her family. All of the siblings would open their homes and families to Bessie. You knew that there was great love for her, she would call Sonny and Marian and said 'I need' and whatever it was, they would see that she had it. The nieces and nephews will always remember your birthday cards with the dollar every year until we turned thirteen! We would all laugh when one of us would get two dollars! She was an Aunt that loved her nieces and nephews. She found a way to share her love in small but big ways to us! Each one of us had a stuff animal with our name stitched on it, Bessie 'style'. She was the 'picture snatcher' in the family! She would collect everyone pictures in the family and say they were hers! She would visit in Virginia and we would go back to Beaufort, you be like, how and when did she get those pictures. Her pictures of the family was more than gold in her eyes! Bessie loved her gifts and envelopes that she would receive from the family. Bessie health became a challenge for her. This did not stop her nor slow her down from living her life. She would work for Walker Funeral in Beaufort but did not like to attend funerals. Upon returning to Beaufort, Sharon Ingram her classmate and friend would become Bessie overseer. Sharon made sure Bessie never missed her doctor appointments and all her needs were meet. Sharon knew how to handle Bessie and could get her to behave herself. We all knew she could be a hand full. Doris would always try to get Bessie over the Christmas holiday to be together for their birthdays. Whenever Doris would call to bring her to Kilmarnock, Bessie would say, I can come but I got be back for my appointments. There was no better patient than Bessie. She made sure she took her medicine and visit the doctors on time. Bessie enjoyed having family to visit; Sonny and Marian would come from Suffolk, Virginia with a three month supply of whatever she needed. Edmon and his family would come in the summer from Cincinnati, Ohio. Sylvia would come from Landover, Maryland with her family. Doris and her family from come from Kilmarnock, Virginia. Melton would come from Cincinnati, Ohio and later Westland, Michigan with his family. The family made it a point to come on the second weekend in March for years to celebrate and remember Matthew Godette Sr. The sibling would arrive in July for the Queen Street Reunion. Bessie would never want to go but she always wanted the T-shirt. She loved her oyster dinners, Dr. Peppers and lay's canister chips. Whenever the family took her out to eat, you had to make sure that the tip went on the table after Bessie got up! Bessie would say someone was looking at her and say out loud 'What the John Brown are you looking at?' and stick her tongue out! Can anyone tell us who John Brown is? Bessie apartment was small, but she had a place for everything and everything in its place! She would save any new clothes and say, 'I don't want to mess them up!' The family dynamics would change over the years but our most stable fixture in Beaufort was Bessie! Bessie was admitted into Hospice care during the planning of our May 2022 Godette Family Reunion by our young adults: Adrienne McCoy, Chelsea Godette and Edmon Hill Jr. We got to see Bessie and loved on her not knowing it would be most of our last time to be with her! Bessie was able to hold the youngest addition to the family, her great-great nephew's twins; Titus and Tatum Gehring. Sharon would update Sonny and Marian weekly if not daily. Edmon Hill Jr. would make two more trips to see her after the May reunion. Bessie would tell Sharon that Edmon Jr. had come to see her, not knowing if Bessie knew what she was saying was correct, Sharon would contact someone in the family to verify it was true! We are thankful for Sharon Ingram, the staff of Friendly Caregiver and Crystal Bluffs Rehabilitation and Health that took care of Bessie over the years for their service. Bessie neighbor, John Hudgins had a kind heart and provided her with a fresh cup of coffee daily and shared meals with her. Her special caregivers Juanita Graham, Wanda Miller, Debra Smith, and from friendly caregivers. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 on Sunday at Bridgeway Church with Pastor Samuel Cain officiating. Burial will follow at Ocean View Cemetery in Beaufort. Bessie was preceded in death by her parents Matthew and Cornelia Godette and four siblings: Edmon Godette Sr., Sylvia L. Godette Barbee, Doris N. Godette Hill Carter and Robert Godette. She leaves to cherish her memories her brothers; Matthew (Sonny) and Marian Godette, of Suffolk,Virginia, Melton and Sandra Godette Sr. of Westland, Michigan. Her nieces and nephews that she loved dearly; Anthony, Julia, Robert, Annette, Janice, Angela, Marian, Shirley, Edmon Sr., Cornelia, Wayne, Donneil, Ryan, Mylan, Melton Jr., Malcom, Chelsea.
