Daniel "Dan" Anthony Giffin Jr

Daniel Anthony Giffin Jr., age 80, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2026, in hospice care.

Born in Long Beach, California, on March 28, 1946, Dan lived a life marked by curiosity, dedication, and deep love for his family. He graduated from Seton Hall Prep before serving in the U.S. Navy. After his service, he pursued his passion for science, graduating magna cum laude from West Virginia University with a degree in Geology.

He built a respected career as a hydrologist, contributing to important environmental work at sites such as Love Canal and the Savannah River Site. Later in life, he returned to school to earn a Ph.D. in Geosciences from East Carolina University’s School of Coastal Resources.

Dan found joy in the simple and meaningful things in life. He loved boating and took pride in building boats and model boats. Fishing, hiking in the woods and mountains, reading, watching movies, and cooking at home were among his favorite pastimes. He gave back to others through his volunteer work with hospice and his local church.

Above all, Dan will be remembered for his deep love and devotion to his wife and forever soulmate, Sharon. It was love at first sight, and their lives were forever changed for the better. Whether traveling together on a river cruise in Europe or sitting quietly on their front porch with coffee, they found happiness simply in being together.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon; his stepson, Tracy; the grandchildren of the late Tripp Nelson, Maura and Max Nelson; his brothers, Richard and Kevin; and his sisters, Patty, Kathy, and Mary.

His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the family he loved, and the quiet moments of joy he shared so generously.
