Dawn Pickett

Dawn Pickett, 80, of Harkers Island, passed away on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 at Carteret Health Care of Morehead City.

Dawn was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Beaufort and contributed to her community through her work and passions. She worked at the Down East Public Library in Otway for over 10 years, fostering a love of learning and literature among those she served. Dawn was also an avid quilter, sharing her artistry and creativity with others.

In 1963, She was part of the first female class admitted as freshmen at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and later earned a Master’s degree from North Carolina State University.

Above all, Dawn was a devoted mother and grandmother. She cherished time with her children and grandchildren, taking great pride in their accomplishments and creating many treasured memories with them through the years.

The family will celebrate her life privately.

She is survived by her daughter, Anita Mummert and husband, Ken of Wake Forest, NC; son, Sam Pickett and wife, Cecily of Beaufort; three grandchildren: Jake, Anna and Justice; brother, Jerry Chappell of Burlington, NC.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Edna Chappell.
