For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind2 Timothy 1:7
A funeral service will be held at 3:00pm on Saturday, June 20, 2026 at Purvis Chaple AME Zion Church in Beaufort.
Gilbert (Gil) L. Powell was born to Charles Dwayne Powell Sr. and Jessie Mae Anderson of Allegheny City Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on April 5, 1955. Gil graduated from McKeesport Highschool in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He attended the University of West Virginia then enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served for eight years. His primary specialities were Aerospace Control and Warning Systems Operator. His decorations included air force training ribbons, national defense service metal, air force outstanding unit award, and air force longevity service award ribbon with leaf cluster. After his separation from the military, Gilbert tried on a new hat. He loved construction, so he started working for a company in Myrtle Beach as a rodbuster laysteel. His job led him to Atlantic Beach and this is where Gil's story began. Gil was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He made up his mind that Beaufort, North Carolina would be his home. It was everything he ever wanted. He found the woman of his life and he married her. Gil met Margaret Hyman Powell in the year of 1985. A year later, the two united in marriage and became one on April 19, 1986 where they shared a life of 40 years. Gil had a blessed life and God planned it that way for him. His God will take care of his family. Gil joined Purvis Chapel AME Zion in Beaufort, North Carolina, was baptized and became a full time member. He became a steward of the church, a member of the Sons of Varrick, Christian Education leader, a Missionary, and a member of the Men’s choir.
Gilbert Powell was preceded in life by his parents, Charles D. Powell and Jessie Mae Anderson, brother Charles D. Powell Jr., and sister Mae Frances Powell.
He leaves to mourn his death, his loving wife Margaret Hyman Powell, two loving children, daughter Marla Hyman Lindsay (Lonnie) and son Joseph Delano Hyman (and wife). He has six grandchildren: I’Cess Young (Ashton) (granddaughter), Taylor Hyman (granddaughter), Trevor Hyman (grandson), Lonnie Chea (grandson), Christina Lindsay (granddaughter), and Christian Lindsay (Grandson). Two Godchildren: Shy-Ann Frazier and Bryana Hyman.
Anyone who knew Gil, knew him to be a quiet, friendly and humble man. He was very spiritual. He loved and cherished his wife, children, grandchildren, godchildren, and his Uncle Gil (she knows who he is talking about).
Gilbert also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and friends.
