James “Jim” French, 86, of Beaufort, passed away on Wednesday, September 3, 2025 at The Gardens of Trent in New Bern.
A proud U.S. Navy veteran, Jim was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, where he served his country with dedication. His commitment to community and fellowship was evident through his more than 50 years as a member of the Elks Lodge in New Bern. He also attended Woodville Baptist Church in Bettie, where he found spiritual connection and community.
Jim had a deep love for the outdoors and was an avid fisherman who found joy and peace on the water. He was especially passionate about the preservation of Portsmouth Island, dedicating time and energy to protecting its natural beauty and heritage.
A man of many interests, Jim enjoyed beach music and shag dancing, often bringing energy and rhythm to gatherings. He was also an enthusiastic cruiser, relishing time spent at sea exploring new places. At home, he found great pleasure in cooking—especially for his family—sharing meals that brought people together around the table.
The family will celebrate Jim’s life privately.
He is survived by his wife, Diane of Beaufort and his sister, Sue-Carol Taylor and husband, Joe of Beaufort; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ruth French of New Bern.
