James Guthrie

James “Frank” “Abba” Guthrie, 93, of Harkers Island, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2026, at Carteret Health Care of Morehead City.

James proudly served in the United States Air Force and later retired from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), dedicating his career to service and science.

He will be remembered fondly by those who knew him as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His love for his family was immeasurable and deeply cherished.

A graveside service will be held at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at Vergie Mae Cemetery on Harkers Island.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Peggy Guthrie of Harkers Island; daughter, Tammy Daniels and husband, David of Straits; grandchildren, Dustin Daniels and wife, Kristy of Hampstead; Devin Daniels and wife, Jordon of Newport; Dakota Earp and husband, Stephen of Beaufort; Dayvee Jernigan and husband, Dakota of Otway; great grandchildren: Colton, Macon, Landon, Julia, Brendel, Tatum, Caroline, and Dani; brother, Mitchell Guthrie and wife, Linda of Newport; and his special caregivers: Pat Andrews, Laurie Bowman, and Megan Meadows.

He was preceded in death by his son, Danny Guthrie; parents, Irvin and Bertha Guthrie; brothers, Garland, Larry, and Doug; sisters, Barbara Parkins and Jenny Russell.
