Jimmie W. Spruill of Beaufort NC passed away peacefully on August 22, 2026 at the Newport Hospice House. Jimmie was a devoted husband father, grandfather, brother, veteran, and pillar of his community.
Born on Valentine’s Day in 1936 in Mackeys Ferry, North Carolina, Jimmie brought warmth, love, and joy to everyone who knew him. He spent his life cultivating deep roots in North Carolina, leaving behind a legacy defined by his kindness, dedication, and strength of character. Jimmie was a proud veteran who served his country in the United States Air Force and held a lifelong love and profound respect for all military personnel. A remarkably social man, Jimmie knew no strangers and genuinely loved to talk to everyone he crossed paths with.
An avid outdoorsman, Jimmie was happiest when he was fishing and hunting, or off-roading in his Jeep Cherokee through the Uwharrie Mountains. He had a great love for travel, holding a special place in his heart for both England and the striking landscapes of Arizona. Jimmie possessed a gentle soul and an easygoing spirit; he truly loved “old dogs, little children…” He always believed that if the moon was "overhead or underfoot," that was the best time to be had.
Jimmie’s greatest joy was his family. He deeply loved his "young old lady," Deborah, with whom he just celebrated an incredible 50 years of marriage. He loved his son, Gavin Gilligan, immensely and had a deep respect and friendship with Gavin’s mother Margaret Rodgers. Jimmie shared an equally profound and unbreakable bond with both of his daughters, holding a deep pride in each of them. He was intensely proud of Angela's dedication as a teacher, her husband Hunter, a Captain at the fire department, and their daughter Jennifer. Jessica's husband, Rick, was Jimmie's best friend—his "My main man"—and Jimmie completely cherished their children: Jesse "Sonny Boy" and his "Darling Grand Girls," Cecily, Laila, and Emily. Jimmie also held a deep affection for his extended family, especially his nieces and nephews; he loved traveling to ensure he never missed any special events or milestones in their lives.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Deborah K. Spruill; his daughters, Jessica M. Hurlburt (Ivan) and Angela N. Spruill (Hunter); and his son, Gavin Gilligan. He is also survived by his five cherished grandchildren, Ivan J.Hurlburt, Cecily G. Hurlburt, Laila L. Hurlburt, Emily N. Hurlburt, and Jennifer M. Brickhouse; his brother, Phillip Spruill; and a large, loving extended family of numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Velna Ioa Spruill and Walter Johnson Spruill, as well as his siblings, Patricia Davis, Earl Spruill, Bob Spruill, Hazel Tertocha, Mildred Wright, Walter Spruill, Marvin Spruill, and Joyce Spruill. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Raymond Spruill, who passed away just the evening prior.
