Johnnie O. Gray Sr., 80, of Atlantic, passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2025 at the Crystal Coast Hospice House of Newport.
Johnnie led a life deeply rooted in the coastal traditions of his community. He spent many years working as a commercial fisherman, dedicating himself to the demanding and honest labor of clamming and oystering. His connection to the water was not just a livelihood but a way of life that reflected his enduring work ethic and resilience.
In addition to his time on the water, Johnnie worked for 18 years at the waste site in Atlantic, where he was known for his reliability and commitment. His steady presence and strong sense of responsibility left a lasting impression on those who worked alongside him.
Beyond his professional life, Johnnie found joy and expression through music. He played guitar with the country music band "Down East Boys," sharing his talent with audiences who appreciated the heartfelt sound of traditional country tunes. Music was also a cherished part of family gatherings, where Johnnie’s guitar playing brought warmth and togetherness to those closest to him.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 12, 2025 at Sea Level Baptist Church.
He was survived by his wife of 30 years, Clara Baxter of Atlantic; son, Johnnie “John” O. Gray Jr. of Smyrna; numerous nieces and nephews; and his faithful companion, “Ebbie”.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Rutherford and Lydia Gray; daughter, Connie Nicole; six brothers: Rutherford Gray Jr., Julius Gray, Jack Gray, Dallas Gray, Tony Gray, Larry Gray; five sisters, Sarah Gray, Vera Nix, Faye Hill, Elwanda Gray, Violet Simons.
