Kenneth Courtney

December 19, 1963 — October 1, 2025

Harkers Island

Kenneth Mark Courtney, known to many as “Ham Shy or “Kenny” 61, of Harkers Island, originally of Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, October 1, 2025 at the Crystal Coast Hospice House of Newport with his family by his side.

Kenneth first arrived on Harkers Island in 1990 aboard a scallop boat. It was there that he met Jo Ann, and the two were married in 1992. Their family grew with the birth of their son, Austin, in 1994.

Kenneth spent many years working at Russell's Glass Shop before continuing his career at East Bay Boat Works on Harkers Island. He took great pride in his work and enjoyed it deeply until health challenges following back surgery made it no longer possible.

In 2023, Kenneth became ill and was unable to recover. He is in Heaven now walking the streets of gold, in no more pain.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, October 18, 2025 at Vergie Mae Cemetery on Harkers Island with Pastor Manley Rose officiating.

He is survived by his son, Austin Courtney of Harkers Island; wife, Jo Ann Courtney of Harkers Island; and brother, Steve Molen of Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his father, David Courtney; mother, Donna Norvell; sister, Denise, brothers, Craig, Mike, and Terry.
