Lloyd “Mike” Rose, 81, of Gloucester, passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2025 at the Crystal Coast Hospice House of Newport with his wife and daughter by his side.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, July 8, 2025 at Vergie Mae Cemetery on Harkers Island. The family will receive friends after the service.
Mike was born at home on Harkers Island on November 22, 1943, to Howard and Alice Rose and was the youngest of six children. He spent his entire life on the water. He made his living as a commercial fisherman and boat builder as the owner of Rose’s Boatworks in North River. He was a great lover of animals, in particular horses, chickens, and dogs. He was especially proud of his three grandsons, Mitchell, Alex, and Tanner, and his great grandson, Caden. Many evenings were spent riding around in the front seat of granddaddy’s truck after riding to Cab’s to get their supply of candy.
Mike was saved in April 2011, and was a faithful member of Huggins Memorial Baptist Church. He loved playing his guitar during church services. During the last fourteen years, he and his wife, Gwen, spent every moment together, whether they were in church, working on a job, or fishing on Back Sound.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and two sisters.
He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Gwen; his daughter, Beverly (Pernell); grandchildren, Mitchell, Alex (Lisa), and Tanner; great grandson, Caden; brother-in-law, Buddy; and several nieces and nephews.
