Melvin Hunnings, 92, of Otway, passed away on Monday, August 18, 2025 at Carteret Health Care of Morehead City.
Melvin answered the call of duty at an early age. At just 17 years old, he served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War. His bravery in combat was extraordinary; he endured over 72 hours under enemy fire and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in service to his nation. His military service remained a defining chapter of his life and a source of pride for those who knew him.
Following his time in the armed forces, Melvin continued to serve through civilian channels. He retired from Civil Service at Cherry Point, where his work contributed to the strength and readiness of our nation's defense efforts. His dedication extended beyond professional obligations into personal commitments that reflected his values and faith.
A devoted member of Otway Christian Church, Melvin found strength and fellowship within his congregation. He also held the distinction of being an honorary member of the Otway Fire Department—a testament to his enduring support for local first responders and community safety initiatives.
Outside of his professional and civic responsibilities, Melvin was an avid hunter who cherished time spent outdoors. His appreciation for nature and skill as a sportsman were well known among those close to him.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 23, 2025 at Otway Christian Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery with Military Honors. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00pm on Friday at the church.
