Born August 11, 1944, he was the middle child of the late Milton and Edna Brooks Scott of Harkers Island. His daddy put a hammer in his hand when he was very young, and he kept it there for his entire life. He loved building and took pride in seeing what he had created. He built endless beautiful homes and made many new friendships with the owners over the years.
After graduating from Smyrna High School, he took a job working with the company that was building East Carteret High School. He was offered a job building a bridge in Florida and moved to Homestead. He later moved to Glen Burnie, MD, where he worked for a company that installed computer floors. During the Vietnam war he worked with a team installing a computer floor in the war room at the Pentagon. The work was halted quite frequently for meetings. When he returned home to Carteret County he worked as a foreman for Jerry Lawrence, General Contractor, until he began his own business, Scott Construction Inc., in 1983. His most enjoyable moments in building projects were spent with his nephew, Brett Styron, who shared his love for building. He was a member of Williston Methodist Church where he served for years as chairman of the administrative counsel and was always on call to handle any building or repair issues for the church. He loved to travel and enjoyed many trips with friends and family and especially loved trying regional foods. The place he loved most was Williamsburg, VA, where he and his wife, Debbie, went on their honeymoon and returned to every year. He also loved riding all day in all the New England states and finding covered bridges which he found amazing.
When living in Maryland he became a Washington Redskins fan and a Baltimore Orioles fan. He enjoyed many trips to Camden Yards. Baseball was always his favorite sport as he had played third base with the Eastern Blues. He loved to cook. His specialties were brisket, crab cakes and the steamed crabs he fell in love with when he lived in Maryland. He enjoyed sharing with friends as much as he enjoyed eating his creations.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Debbie Scott; daughters, Angela Scott and Tessie Willis; sister, Nettie Lou Styron; brother, Charles Scott; grandchildren, Amanda Leffers and Brianne Willis; great- grandchildren, Nick Brazelton and wife, Annsley, Makayla Brazelton, Savannah Tyndall, Kenzlee Tyndall, Parker Adkins and special nephew, Mark Davis and wife, Heather. Mark spent many hours with “Uncle Milt” when he was a child and considered him a second daddy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Priscilla Lewis; brother, Teddy Scott; granddaughter, Chesley Adkins; and in-laws, Kenneth and Mildred Piner.
Memorial donations may be made to the Williston Methodist Church, PO Box 917, Williston NC 28589.
