Sophia Turnage

Sophia Dickinson Turnage, 82, of Beaufort, passed away on Monday, August 31, 2026 at her home.

A member of Beaufort by the Sea Community Church, Sophia was also a dedicated employee of Duke Marine Lab, where she worked for more than 35 years. Her long career reflected a lasting commitment to her work and to the Beaufort community she called home.

Outside of work, Sophia had a deep enjoyment of sports. She especially loved ECU football and followed all sports with enthusiasm. Those interests were a meaningful part of her life and among the things for which she was well known.

Sophia will also be remembered for being strong-willed and independent. These qualities were central to how those who knew her understood her, and they remained an enduring part of her presence throughout her life.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, September 10, 2026 at Noe-Brooks Funeral Home in Morehead city.

She is survived by her daughter, Michelle Hunter of Beaufort; granddaughter, Tiffany Hunter of Beaufort; great-granddaughter, Isabella Hunter of Beaufort; sister, Carrie Stallings of Beaufort.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Ellen Dickinson; sister, Ellen Jones; granddaughter, Ashley Hunter.
