Susan Willis

February 28, 1953 — April 24, 2026

Beaufort

Susan Carlisle Willis, a lifelong resident of Beaufort, North Carolina, was born on February 28, 1953, to Verta and Glenn Willis. She passed away on April 24, 2026, after a short and unexpected illness. She faced her illness with quiet courage and dignity, surrounded by love and giving it everything she had.

Susan loved deeply and unconditionally. She was an honest, selfless, and loyal person who loved fiercely. She was the kind of person who showed up—for her family, her friends, and anyone who needed her. She had a natural way of making people feel comfortable, cared for, and truly at home. Being around her just felt easy. That same steady care, honesty, and dedication carried into her work, where she served as a Deputy Clerk in the criminal division of the Carteret County Courthouse, working within the North Carolina Judicial Branch. She took great pride in her work, serving the public and the court system with the same honesty, care, and dedication that defined her life.

Her greatest joy in life was her family. As a mother, she loved Leigh and Allison with a deep and unconditional love that never wavered. That same love carried over to her grandchildren, Annie and Max, and to one of the roles she cherished most—being their “Gaga.” As their grandmother, her love was just as strong, steady, and unconditional. The love she poured into them will continue to shape who they are, and it’s something they will carry with them throughout their lives.

Service times are pending.

She is survived by her daughters, Leigh Cox Long (Bill) and Allison Cox Williams (Aaron); her grandchildren, Max Williams and Annie Williams; her sister, Dianne Willis Phillips (Jack) of Morehead City; her nephew, Jackson Phillips (Cristy); her niece, Jenny Phillips Toney (C.L.); and her great-nieces and nephews, Ridge Toney, Caroline Phillips, Jack Phillips, and Liv Toney.

Susan is also survived by Phil Snell, her beloved companion of over 30 years and a cherished part of her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Verta and Glenn Willis.

Susan will be remembered for her warmth, her honesty, her selflessness, and her loyalty, and for the way she loved her people so fiercely and unconditionally. She leaves behind a lifetime of love, memories, and a presence that will never be forgotten.
