Vannie "Chummy" Willis

April 27, 1941 — May 12, 2025

Williston

Vannie “Chummy” Willis, 84, of Williston, passed away on Monday, May 12, 2025 at his home.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday, May 15, 2025 at Smyrna Pentecostal Holiness Church with Pastor Kevin Howard officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Lane Cemetery in Williston. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Wednesday at the church.

A lifelong Menhaden fisherman, he spent his days on the water, a place he deeply loved and found peace in. His connection to the sea was not just a profession but a way of life that shaped his character and brought him joy.

Mr. Willis was a devoted member of Smyrna Pentecostal Church and held a deep love for Jesus. His faith was central to his life, and he found great comfort in southern gospel music, which often filled his home and heart.

Known for his compassion, especially toward the elderly, Mr. Willis had a generous spirit and unwavering loyalty. To be his friend was to have a friend for life—steadfast, kind, and true.

He was also an exceptional cook, celebrated for his collards, clam chowder, conch stew, along with his "Chummy Dumplins", and especially his clam bakes. His meals were more than food; they were acts of love shared with those around him.

He was survived by his wife of 60 years, Nancy Willis of Williston; daughter, Marilyn Deruise and husband, Billy of Newport; daughter, Linda Smith Willis and husband, Shaun of Atlantic; daughter, Teresa Lane of Williston; son, Wayne “Turkey” Willis and girlfriend, Lana Lee of Morehead City; grandchildren, Katie Smith of Atlantic and Gage Willis of Otway; brother, Thomas H. Willis and wife, Jeanette of Williston; his special friend, Billy Gaskill (Gail); and his fur baby, Sammy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Edith Willis; two aunts, Melva O’Shall and Mildred Taylor; cousin, Gregory Taylor; son-in-law, Robert Smith; and his two special fur babies, Sissy and Scooter.
