Verena "Rena" Carol Brazie passed away peacefully on November 14, 2023, at the age of 86.
Rena was born to Emma and Tyre Moore on May 18, 1937. She grew up on Harkers Island, and at 17, is where she first met her husband-to-be, Ray. After dating for only 4 short months, they tied the knot on August 25, 1954. Together they had 4 children, but raised many more. During the early years of their marriage, Rena worked as a waitress and opened scallops at a local scallop house. In the 86 years Rena lived, she was so many things to so many people. She was a daughter, a sister, an aunt, a friend, a wife, but her greatest role was being a mother and a mema. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren endlessly; they were what she lived for. Rena truly had a heart of gold, always looking out for others and helping anyway that she could, often sacrificing her own needs for the good of her family. Her motto was "love covers it all".
Rena had three loves in her life- the Lord, her family, and shopping. She would have spent everyday "in town" if she could have (and sometimes did). She loved a good bargain, particularly on clothes, and enjoyed all kinds of knick-knacks, especially angels and flowers. Rena always insisted that her life-long best friend, Grace, join her in all her excursions. Whether it be shopping or oystering down at the bay (even at the ripe age of 77), she always wanted to be out doing something with the people that she loved. Likewise, on the days she didn't go anywhere, Rena could be found either in front of the stove, cooking up some traditional Harkers Island cuisine, like stewed hard crabs, or in front of her piano, playing old gospel hymns. She had no trouble keeping herself busy.
Rena was unwavering in her Christian faith. From her childhood forward, she lived her life for the Lord, and had a special place in her heart for Harkers Island Pentecostal Holiness Church. She loved attending their services, was a member of the choir, and enjoyed spreading God's word to anyone with ears. We celebrate her overwhelming joy as she now worships God in His glorious presence.
Rena is survived by her sons, Mitchell Brazie (partner Linda), and Phillip Brazie; daughter, Brooke Brazie (fiance Jamie); grandchildren, Jason Brazie, Tyler Brazie, Laken Brazie, Wade Melton, Ricky Guthrie, Jr., Adam Guthrie, and Matthew Guthrie, as well as numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and her best friend, Grace Willis.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Brazie; son Ryan Brazie; daughter, Tammy Wright; parents, Emma and Tyre Moore; sisters, Daphne Wilson, Pauline Lawrence, Dale Lewis, and Melissa Hamiltion, and brothers, Roderick Moore, Cranston Moore, and Laurie Moore.
The family will receive friends at 1:00pm on Sunday, November 19, 2023, followed by a funeral service at 2:00pm at Harkers Island Pentecostal Holiness Church, with Pastor Dell Murphy officiating. Interment will follow in Vergie Mae Cemetery.
