William "Lew" Lewis Newman

November 24, 1945 — May 8, 2025

Beaufort

William Lewis Newman, known to all as “Lew,” passed away peacefully at home on May 8, 2025, at the age of 79. A lifelong resident of Beaufort, North Carolina, Lew was born on November 24, 1945, to Richard Newman Sr. and Marcelle Johnson Newman.

A celebration of Lew’s life will be held on Friday, May 16, 2025, from 4-6 p.m. at Bridgeway Church of Beaufort located at 100 Lockhart Drive.

Lew lived a life marked by service, strength, and deep devotion to family and community. He proudly served as both a police officer and firefighter as well as leadership in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, roles through which he became a trusted protector and neighbor to many. For decades, he was also a familiar face at the Beaufort Ice Company, where his steady presence and warm spirit became part of the town’s fabric.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Lewis Newman, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and partnership, and a marriage of 55 years. Lew was a devoted father to Caroline Newman Piercey and Christopher Newman, and a supportive father-in-law to Edward Piercey and Penelope Gatlin. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Jamie Newman, Preston Newman, Carrie Piercey, and Rowan Newman, and great-grandchildren: Raelynn Newman, Kendalynn Newman, and Lily Newman.

He was preceded in death by his parents as well as siblings Richard “Dickey” Newman, Nancy McCausley, Julia Tourney, Joyce Newman, and Bruce Congleton; and survived by sibling Gerald Newman.

Lew's kindness, quiet strength, and unwavering sense of duty touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Whether donning a uniform or offering a helping hand to a neighbor, he served with humility and heart. He will be remembered not only for what he did, but for who he was - a loving father, a loyal friend, and a cornerstone of his community.

A special thanks from the family goes to UNC Hospice, whose support and care in his final months allowed Lew to pass peacefully at home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his memory to the Beaufort Volunteer Fire Department, UNC Hospice, or a local charity of your choice. Lew Newman’s legacy is etched in the hearts of those he loved and the town he helped shape. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
