Evelyn Johnson

Evelyn Dorris Murray Johnson, 81, of Beaufort passed away on Monday, June 26, 2023, at Carteret Health Care in Morehead City.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on July 2, 2023, at Purvis Chapel AME Zion Church of Beaufort, with Reverend Fryar officiating. Interment will follow at Oceanview Cemetery in Beaufort.

She was the daughter of the late Elisha and Rosalee Murray.

Evelyn was born and raised in the North River Community.  She joined Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church at an early age, where she was a member of the Choir and the Ushers Board. After the flooding of her home from several storms, it was finally condemned in 2007. Evelyn then moved to Beaufort and became a member of Purvis Chapel AME Zion Church, where she served as a member on various boards such as the Missionary Society, Senior Choir, President of Life Members, Kitchen Committee, Stewardess Board, President of the Deaconess Board (which was dear to her heart).

She attended Queen Street High School and earned her high school diploma from Carteret Community College.  Forty-two years of her life were dedicated to Blue Bell Shirt Factory as a folder.  After Blue Bell’s closing, she worked for Sunshine Laundry, Harborview Nursing Home, Little Citizen’s Day Care and taking care of PJ (her mini-me).

She is survived by her children, Teresa Parker of Beaufort, NC, Andrea Murray (Yolanda) of Durham, NC, Beverly James (Roger), of Savannah, TN, Donnie Cox of Belhaven, NC, Jessica McLean (Henry Devon), of Kinston, NC and Lekesha George (Doug) of Beaufort, NC; grandchildren, Porsha Parker-Partee (Derrick) of Whitsett, NC, Jonathan Reels of Raleigh, NC, Donecie Eborn of Fayetteville, NC, Justin Wallace of Beaufort, NC, Donte Ebron of Belhaven, NC, Aja Davis of Beaufort, NC, Nyema George of Beaufort, NC, Julian George of Beaufort, NC, Ivory Crooms of Beaufort, NC, Shequita Smith of Durham, NC and Rakiya Odom of Winston-Salem, NC; great grandchildren, Xavier Partee, Jordan Partee, Kingston Partee and Porsha Partee of Whitsett, NC, Ka’Miyah Breeden and Ka’Nila Breeden of Durham, NC; uncles, McCline Murrell of Beaufort, Levi Murrell (Joyce) of West Chester, PA, Charles Murrell (Ruby), Winston Murrell (Rosetta) of Beaufort, NC; aunts, Dollie Davis, Vivian Murrell and Doris Murray, Beaufort, NC; brother-in-law, Arizona Johnson (Loretta) of Beaufort, NC and Walter Murrell of Lake Charles, LA; sisters-in-law, Maria Mushangahiki (Hyidanti), Doris Johnson of Beaufort, NC; sisters-to-the-heart, Mary Lou Pritchard, Nancy Benders, Earlene Brimmer, Loretta Johnson, Dot Mae Johnson, Helen Robinson, Dorlena Smith, Verdell Burrs and Gloria Crooms.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Claude Johnson; son, Michael Murray; parents, Elisha and Rosalee Murray; and a sister, Queenie Taylor.
